So, today a hospital engineering dept. tells me about a meeting they had with the anesthesia dept.  / This meeting was to review the need to turn off or disconnect the WAGD system when not in use, to reduce the work and energy cost on the vacuum pumps. / The anesthesia dept. at this point, tells the engineering dept. they can not do this.  BECAUSE the WAGD system has to stay on to keep the anesthesia machine sterile !

    Any Input would help.

The scavenger interface has nothing to do with keeping the machine sterile.  Its' purpose is to remove anesthetic gases from the breathing circuit and, in the newer machines, remove the ventilator drive gas.  These gases are to be removed from the OR so the clinical personnel are not exposed to the gases.
