A few of my clients have informed me that either a joint commissions surveyor,  or a mock joint commission surveyor have instructed them that their medical gas zone valves are required to be labeled on the outside of the box as well as  The inside of the box. Each of these clients has asked me to show them where this is written in the NFPA 99 code.  I cannot find those specific directions for labeling the zone valve on the outside of the box as well as the inside of the box in the code. I  do you like to see these zone valve boxes labeled in this manner but would like to know where joint commissions is getting this information in there directing facilities to add labeling.

If you have the answer, please provide specific code references.

Bob, without question this is a personal preference thing.  The subject has been debated at standards, but labelling in the box has always been held to be adequate.
