Let's say you have six gases coming in from an outside location - Oxy, Air, Nit, N2O, CO2 and HE.  Does the trench have to have six burial tapes or not?

Section #5.1.10.11.5.8: Holds the answer !

( even though its seems crazy in this case )

The wording is - "SHALL CLEARLY IDENTIFY THE PIPELINE BY SPECIFIC NAME".

In my opinion, that's each gas by names or chemical symbol and color coding.

This type product / tape is readily available from many suppliers.

Now, lets talk about that marker list in Section #5.1.10.11.5.9:

Yes the one half the depth of burial.

This continuous warning means, could easily be debated as a single marker / tape.

(i.e. a single tape with the wording medical gases buried below)

All section from NFPA 99 2015 Edition

With that many underground pipes you would want to have several markers so that you didn't inadvertently miss the burial tape and hit one of the lines.

Sounds like 2 layers to me Al.

5.1.10.11.5.8 A continuous tape or marker placed immediately above the pipe or its enclosure shall clearly identify the pipeline by specific name.

5.1.10.11.5.9 A continuous warning means shall also be provided above the pipeline at approximately one-half the depth of burial.

That's what, I typed and reported.

But understand, its clear that the markings immediate above the continuous enclosure, shall be for each medical gas its contains.

The marking half the depth of buried, could be interpreted and satistied the code with a single marker.

    As I see it.

I agree with Al on that point but you can see if you had five lines in the trench side-by-side you could miss the single tape  that's half way down in the trench.
