NFPA 99 Section #5.1.9.3.5 & Relocation

    NFPA 99 Section #5.1.9.3.5

    5.1.9.3.5 Area alarm panels for medical gas systems shall provide visual and audible indication in the event a mismatch occurs between the transducer(s) and its associated circuit board(s). 

    This is a two part question.

     

    1) Is it a failure / deficiency, (when doing a certification per NFPA 99 2012 Edition) if the an area alarm, is relocated during a remodel project and it does not meet this listed code requirement?

     

    2) Is their a list from the manufactures of medical gas & vacuum area alarms, that list the model numbers or series, of their area alarms not meeting this code requirement?

    1) I think it depends on your location and what version the AHJ is authorized to enforce. In California and Nevada the 2012 edition of NFPA 99 is enforced. On all military and VA facilities it is NFPA 99, 2012 edition. If the alarm panel is not touched then in California, Nevada and VA or Military facilities it has been my experience the projects are not required to bring the component to current code since it exists under a permit and meets the code required at the time of the original permit. (Also known more commonly as "grandfathered". If the alarm panel is relocated then the original permit the alarm panel was installed no longer applies and the NFPA 99, 2012 edition requirements "kick in" are in place for the AHJ to enforce. That is how it works our world out here. (Be nice!)
